KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

• Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your shift's start time to park and check in.

  • Volunteers arriving more than 30 minutes late may be asked to reschedule, as missing safety and project instruction can impact your safety and food quality for our neighbors. 

  • If the front parking lot is filled, you'll find the back parking lot behind the building, across the train tracks.

• Personal items are not permitted in project areas, for food quality and volunteer safety around moving equipment. You are welcome to store bags, backpacks, purses, and food/drink in our complimentary lockers.

• For your comfort and safety, the following dress code is required:

  • Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes

  • Pants/shorts at least mid-thigh in length (knee-length for shifts in the Keegan Kitchen)

  • Shirts/tops with sleeves, no midriff exposed

  • No offensive or inappropriate messaging

• Complimentary water and tea are provided for all volunteers. Additional refreshments are available for purchase from our Texans Café and Grab n' Go station in the lobby. Proceeds from these sales help support the mission of Houston Food Bank.

• Media: If you plan to invite or share your volunteer shift with broadcast/print media, or film outside of volunteer area, or wish to have a Food Bank spokesperson available for interviews, please contact Hugo Lagarda, Director of Marketing & Communications, at least 2 weeks prior to your volunteer session. We encourage volunteers to share their photos and experience across social media--please tag us!

• Catering: Enhance your volunteer experience with 535 Catering! Contact us to place your order at least 3 business days in advance, and receive a complimentary 1-hour room rental for your group. No outside food or drinks permitted in room rental, and rooms are based on availability.

• Remember to clean out your pantry before your shift! Bring any food items you'd like to donate--regardless of dents or expiration dates.

Additional Information: 

Volunteer support is critical to our mission of food for better lives!  The Houston Food Bank utilizes volunteers seven days a week at our main warehouse. Whether you come out as an individual or part of a group, we are certain you will have an enjoyable, positive experience.  

SPECIAL NOTES:    

• Volunteers under the age of 14 must complete a Minor Waiver Form signed by a parent or guardian and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the shift.

• All volunteers under the age of 18 also need a completed Minor Waiver Form signed by a parent or guardian.

• A copy of the Minor Waiver form can be downloaded by clicking the RESOURCES tab on your Volunteer Profile page.  

Description of Duties: 

Varies with the makeup volunteers for shift. Most of the projects at the warehouse involve inspecting, sorting, and repackaging of donated food items for community distribution.

From Downtown:  Take IH-10 east and exit Gellhorn St. (exit #774).  Make a U-turn at Gellhorn, stay on feeder and turn right on Portwall St.
